Copper based algaecides are the fastest way to eliminate an algal outbreak in your pool.
However, care must be taken to not damage the salt cell, which can occur if the cells are “live” in the presence of high copper levels.
So, firstly, disconnect your salt cell from the power outlet **
With the pump running, evenly distribute 1L of Copper based Algaecide per 40,000L of pool water around the edge of your pool. It's important not to add and chlorine at this point as sometime chemicals are not suppossed to be mixed, especially if there are high stabiliser (cuanuric acid) present in the pool.
Continue to run the pump for a minimum 4 hours. Treated water must circulate wherever algae affected water has been in contact - solar heating, vacuum hoses, pool cleaning equipment, robots and toys, etc
After 24-36 hours, most of the algae should be dead (pending water temperature – it may take another day in colder weather)
At this stage, assess whether the material on the floor of the pool can be manually vacuumed to waste (usually recommended if there is a lot of very fine dead algae or organic matter). You may wish to add a clarifier to help coagulate suspended matter so it may become filterable.
Otherwise, reinstate your normal pump and filtration cycle, and re-connect the salt chlorinator to the power supply.
The salt cell should start replenishing chlorine levels within a few days. In the meantime, it’s wise to add a boost of granular chlorine, like a salt water sanitiser through the skimmer box while the pump is running. Dosage rates are 100g per 10,000L
Next, test and balance the water’s pH and alkalinity with the addition of Buffer (sodium bicarbonate) or Hydrochloric Acid.
If the water remains cloudy or murky, consider a flocculent or clarifying tablet.
**with the exception of this point, instructions are the same for pools without a Salt Chlorinator.
please note that it is not recommended to use a copper based algaecide for ionised pools like the Naked system for example. for ionised pools that have algae present, it is advised to use a metal free agaecide like ZZ60
